One of the most common questions we get at Elmwood Bark & Stone is: “How much mulch do I actually need?”
Ordering the right amount of mulch can save you time, money, and extra trips to the yard. Whether you are freshening up garden beds around your home or installing mulch on a larger commercial property, understanding coverage and depth is the key to getting the project done right.
Start By Measuring Your Beds
Before ordering mulch, measure the length and width of each mulch bed in feet. Multiply the two numbers together to determine the square footage.
For example:
- A garden bed that is 10 feet long and 5 feet wide equals 50 square feet.
- Two beds that size would equal 100 square feet.
Once you know the total square footage, the next step is determining how deep you want the mulch installed.
What Is the Proper Depth for Mulch?
Most mulch applications should be installed between 2” and 4” deep.
- 2” Depth: Ideal for annual refreshes where mulch already exists and you are simply topping it off.
- 3” Depth: The most common installation depth for most landscape beds.
- 4” Depth: Best for weed suppression in larger beds or areas with little existing mulch coverage.
Applying mulch too thin may allow weeds to grow through quickly, while installing mulch too thick can trap excess moisture and limit airflow to plant roots.
Use Our Cubic Yard Calculator
To make estimating easier, Elmwood Bark & Stone offers a free online cubic yard calculator that helps determine exactly how much mulch, stone, or soil your project requires.
Use the Elmwood Bark & Stone Cubic Yard Calculator
As a general rule:
- 1 cubic yard of mulch covers approximately a 10’ x 10’ area at 3” deep.
This simple guideline can help homeowners quickly estimate smaller projects before placing an order.
Don’t Forget About Settling and Existing Mulch
Keep in mind that mulch naturally settles over time. If your beds have not been mulched in several years, you may need additional material to achieve the proper depth.
It is also important to consider whether old mulch is still present. Existing mulch can reduce the amount of new material required, especially if the previous layer is still in good condition.
